Manna from the Deep Blue Sea

A while ago, I was talking to a mate about the benefits of seaweed.  Well, actually she was expounding the benefits while I mentally scratched my head. I knew it was good but we mostly know of it as something that wraps sushi (or between it) or eaten as a snack.  She, on the other hand, can't even fathom how that would look since the ones she bought was in powdered form that she sprinkles into her soup.

So the other day, when I saw some seaweed snacks at the store, I couldn't help but be reminded of our conversation and thought to do a little entry on it.

There are many varieties of seaweed here.  There are the big square ones that would help when you want to wrap sushi.  I didn't buy this type but I've used it before the one time I made sushi.

This seaweed snack from Thailand has gained lots of popularity in recent years. They are deep-fried unlike the traditional snacks - not that I know how the traditional ones are cooked, LOL.  The deep-fried  method makes them very crispy and they come in various flavours from original to tom-yam (it's Thai, go figure that flavour would be there!).  I've had my share of it and it's nice but I think the deep-fried manner in which they are cooked leaves an after-taste that leaves much to be desired after a while.  This pic is not mine, borrowed it from another site - thanks mate! :D

Anyway, I settled on the traditional sushi snacks.  It has always come in this packaging when I was growing up - and I might add when I was not even keen on them coz they had a fishy smell (yeh dude they are from the sea, what do you expect!).  Funny how I like them now. I remember my siblings trying to make me eat some but I always declined. Anyway, a pack like this costs about $2.30.

There are about 10 strips of this inside.

And within each mini-pack, there were three pieces. I recall the school canteen selling each mini-pack for 10 or 20 cents, clever devils!  Gotta say that it didn't take me long to devour two of these strips.  That's 12 mini-packs multiplied by three pieces equals to.... oh well, who's counting eh? :D

Oh dearie me, there's nutrition facts too? ;)
