We had a discussion on TA the other day on the allure of Twilight series. Actually it was more a question of why we are so crazy about it, LOL, but I thought I'll refine the subject a bit.
Some thought it had to do with the fact that the stories were in narrative form, in Bella's point of view, thus giving us the feeling that we are experiencing the stories first-hand. Hmm... I'm not quite sure if that is the case for me though.
I usually hate first account stories, absolutely H-A-T-E them! I avoid them like the plague if necessary so I'm not sure if that holds true for me. In fact, I am surprised (albeit pleasantly so) that I finished the first book at all since I have been known to stop reading such books mere paragraphs into the story.
Nonetheless, I do agree there is an allure to this series that I have not encountered in the hundreds of books I've read. I think the fact that the story is set in a very unassuming town to an unassuming girl with unassuming characters involved, make all the books even more vivid in our minds.
I think the books convey these so well that one can't help but be affected:
1) You don't have to be in a glamorous part of the world for adventure to happen. It is up to you to make it happen.
2) You don't have to be someone you are not to be part of something. If you be yourself, someone of worth will see your worth and magic can happen anytime.
She was the same inside as I am,
from the same kind,
I sensed this instantly...
Anna Swir
Doesn't that just remind you of a couple we know?
3) You always have choices even if you have been dealt a bad hand. You just make the best of it and not let yourself be bogged down to behave in a way that is expected of you (especially if it is a negativity).
"I'm sure all this sounds a little bizarre, coming from a vampire." He grinned, knowing how their casual use of that word never failed to shock me. "But I'm hoping that there is still a point to this life, even for us. It's a long shot, I'll admit," he continued in an offhand voice. "By all accounts, we're damned regardless. But I hope, maybe foolishly, that we'll get some measure of credit for trying."
4) You should treat people as individuals and not let yourself be swayed by stereotypes.
Carlisle Cullen. Looking at him without that hate clouding my eyes, I couldn't deny that killing him was murder. He was good. Good as any human we protected. Maybe better. The others, too, I supposed, but I didn't feel as strongly about them. I didn't know them as well. It was Carlisle who would hate fighting back, even to save his own life. That's why we would be able to kill him – because he wouldn't want us, his enemies, to die.
Jacob Black, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 10,
5) There's always hope and we should never give up until the end, no matter how hard the odds seem to be against us, as we saw in the clearing with Cullens and their friends, the Quileutes against the Volturi.
And last but definitely not least,
