Six Degrees of Separation: Why I Love Globalisation!

I had this conversation with a colleague on an otherwise uneventful August morning, as he came up to my desk for something.  It was totally random so caught me off guard.

"Hey Noor, you know that Robert Pattinson?  He's a family friend of mine."

      I looked blankly at him.

     "Robert Pattinson, from Twilight."

I looked up hesitantly at him, "Oh! Right. But why are you suddenly mentioning him?"

"Oh, I saw him on your screensaver. He's a family friend"

I laughed sheepishly. "Oh. He's as charming in person, isn't he?"

"Well I saw him last when he was 14. His younger sister used to play with mine."

"Younger sister? Isn't he the youngest? He's got two older sisters."

"Well yeh, one of those. He's very posh."

"LOL yeh, they all are, aren't they?"

Hours later, I saw him again in the staff room and mentioned that I'd told some of my mates about it and they now want to get into my inner circle now for that degree of separation. I told him, "Justin, you've gotta be my contact into that inner circle now." We had a bit of a laugh about that.

Apparently, Rob's parents had a holiday cottage on the same street that his parents had one as well. Rob's parents are very nice folks (which we knew) though he doesn't think they are together again - to which I declared, "No, I'm pretty sure they are still together!"  Another colleague interjected, "Noor knows all there is to know about Robert Pattinson so you can't say things like that to her." Apparently I talk a wee bit too much about my Twilight obsession to some people.

He further said that Rob's dad had a ferrari dealership so they are quite well off as a result.  I knew about the car dealership but didn't know it was ferraris! Man, that Rob is so humble!

So I now know someone who knows Rob and his family.  Woo hoo! Who would have thought eh, me all the way in Singapore!  Suffice it to say, I was on a high all day...

Two weeks later, my ex-colleague who is now back in Canada sent a message via another colleague on Wednesday:

"Tell Noor that a friend of mine has 2 of his boys playing werewolves in the upcoming Twilight film- I am sure she will find that news quite exciting."

I literally gasped and tried to remember if we have any siblings in the cast. Finally couldn't take it anymore and dropped him a note on facebook that he can't leave me hanging and has to at least tell me the name. His reply:

"I knew you would go crazy with that information. Tyson Houseman has a role as one of the main wolves. His younger brother Todd, I believe, is an extra. I am sure you can tell me what role he is playing now."

Oh my God, my eyes just bulged! I'm that much closer to Quil too! Another Quileute favourite!

And these, my friends, is why I love globalisation! Actually I've always loved it for the experience of meeting and interacting with people from over 60 nationationalities but I'm sure you'll agree that these are such awesome bonuses!
